I jumped at the chance to read Aaron Becker’s newest book. I love his Journey series, as do the students at my school. This book was no different from his previous ones– it is wordless with beautiful illustrations. As you look through the illustrations you piece together the story. A Stone for Sascha starts with a family burying their dog, Sascha, right before they leave on a camping trip. The daughter picks flowers and puts them on her dog’s grave. Suddenly the story jumps to the history of a slab of stone as it goes throughout the ages and is used in different ways until finally it finds its way into the young girl’s hands and she has a special use for it, too.
I was a little confused at first by this change in the storyline, but when I saw the last page the story came full circle. Reading the author’s note at the end contributes to one’s understanding of where the author was going with it. This is a gorgeous book with wonderful illustrations and a beautiful story.
