Amal Unbound

Listen to this book in Granite’s OverDrive Digital Library

Written by Aisha Saeed

The book cover art for Amal Unbound, of hands, decorated with henna, is amazing. That alone will draw readers. The story takes place in Pakistan. Amal is the oldest child who has hopes of becoming a teacher one day. She is forced to leave school when her mother has another baby and suffers from severe postpartum depression. When her father cannot repay a debt, Amal becomes an indentured servant to the village’s ruling family. Eventually she learns that the debt will never be able to be repaid, so she must make the best of her situation and maybe find her own solution to regain her freedom. This is a book with a powerful, important message.
