Neverworld Wake, Marisha Pessl’s third major novel following Special Topics in Calamity Physics and Night Film hits all her old familiar beats: a wealthy New England boarding school filled with blue bloods; a female protagonist, equal parts in awe and fear of her brilliant, beautiful peers; and the shocking death of a classmate, taken far before their prime. That being said, the naturally repetitive structure of the plot actually greatly deepens the overall story, allowing the already vivid characters to interact, scheme, and plan to the benefit of actual character development. In the end, it’s not the shocking twists that hold on to the reader– it’s the wake the characters leave behind.
