Red

By Jed Alexander

This book has no words. It is drawn in pencil or charcoal. The art is wonderful. Although the book is in pencil or charcoal, there are a few places where something is colored in red or pink. This makes the object that is colored stand out. The cover shows a small girl in a red hoodie walking through tall trees. On the other side of the trees is a large, bushy tail. I will try to NOT tell the story but with it only being pictures that is hard. It appears that “Red” is going to grandma’s with a basket. She encounters the wolf and others on each page. It left me wondering if the forest was planning a “Red” feast? The animals carry makings for a party: balloons, cake, ribbon and other party stuff. The artwork on each page is charming. The end is almost expected but still I loved it. I know this would be a fun book to let children tell you what is going on, much like Sector 7 by David Wiesner. The cover caught my eye and the artwork keep me turning the pages.
