Spooked!

How a Radio Broadcast and the War of the Worlds Sparked the 1938 Invasion of America

Written by Gail Jarrow

Spooked! is an excellent resource to teach children and adults about verifying your sources before believing what you see or hear in the news. In 1938, a radio program decided to retell “The War of the Worlds” by H. G. Wells on October 30, 1938. Everyone at the radio station believed that the audience would be bored by the story and were startled to later learn that some American believed the story was true. This book will provide background for the time period, explain why some individuals believed the story, and the effect it has had on American history.
This book will appeal to individuals who are enthusiastic about history, however, it can entice non-history lovers due to how it is written. I perceive that this book could interest 5th-12 grade students because of the length and language used in the book.
