A First Book of the Sea, by Nicola Davies and Emily Sutton

A First Book of the Sea
Written by Nicola Davies, Illustrated by Emily Sutton

This book is filled with short poems about the sea. I found the illustrations engaging and learned some new things, such as when a mother otter needs to hunt for food she will tie her baby in seaweed, so it does not drift away. Some students may not be able to relate to the poems since many have never seen the sea.

  1. I sometimes like to read poems about things I don’t know and places I have never been, so I’m just wondering if poems about the sea, especially when combined with illustrations, could actually help readers who have never visited the sea to gain an understanding and appreciation for it…
