Captain Rosalie

Written by Timothée de Fombelle, Illustrated by Isabelle Arsenault, Translated by Sam Gordon

Captain Rosalie, translated from French to English, is an endearing, creative, insightful, and powerful story that tears at your heart. Rosalie’s father is fighting in the war and her mother works to help the war effort from sunrise until sunset. Rosalie is too young for school, but a teacher lets her sit at the back of her classroom during the day. Rosalie passes the time by imagining that she is a soldier on a secret mission. As the story unravels and everything is revealed, the author really makes you think and feel about the effects of war. In particular, he does a wonderful job of sharing the emotional impact of war on Rosalie and her family from a child’s perspective.
