Sea Sirens

A Trot & Cap’n Bill Adventure, Written by Amy Chu, Illustrated by Janet K. Lee

I am not a huge fan of most graphic novels, but Sea Sirens was definitely an exception. The story is of a teenage Vietnamese American girl, Trot, her one-eyed cat Cap’n Bill, and her Grandpa, who has occasional dementia. Trot takes care of Grandpa while her mother works, and they spend their days at the beach where Grandpa fishes and Trot and Bill surf. After an accident the three of them discover a fantasy world in the sea inhabited by sea sirens and their enemies, the sea serpents. Read the story to discover how Bill becomes a hero, and how they change life in the sea forever.

The story is based off of a combination of the novel The Sea Fairies, written by L. Frank Baum, who wrote The Wizard of Oz, and various Vietnamese folktales. It was a great storyline! The book is beautiful and easy to read and follow. I look forward to the rest of the series.
