Killing November

Written by Adriana Mather

My first impression of this book was not favorable. Why would you send your daughter to a place like the Academy Absconditi without any warnings or instructions? The school seemed barbaric. But I stuck with it and it sucked me into the story. November was not totally unprepared, her parents had taught her ‘games’ that made her hyper-aware and though not perfected at least she had skills to keep herself alive. I still had to suspend my mother instincts to get through it, but I am aware it is kid lit and not real life! As a whole, it was well written and brilliantly thought out, I am just expecting a little more from the next book. I am fairly certain there will be at least one more – November does have to find and rescue her dad and there is the little matter of an emotional attachment to the boy who tried to get her killed! Seriously, it is probably young adult fiction at it’s finest, I am just an adult with way too much fear for children being thrown into such environments. Not unlike Hunger Games, actually.
