Home In The Woods

Written and Illustrated by Eliza Wheeler

Inspired by the author’s grandmother’s childhood, growing up during the Great Depression. When Marvel’s father dies from cancer and her mother is left to raise eight children between ages 3 months to 14 years, they are forced to find an abandoned, tumbledown shack in the woods and turn it into a home. This book goes through the seasons, telling how they planted, cleaned, repaired, worked, and played to provide for their needs and their own entertainment. I loved that it showed the responsibilities each child had and that they all had to work together and needed each other. This lovely story is gorgeously illustrated and told with minimal text for the important, emotional impact that reminds us of our roots.
