Ordinary Hazards: A Memoir

Written by Nikki Grimes

In this memoir, Nikki Grimes talks about her childhood and how while growing up she used writing to help her cope with difficult situations. Her mother suffered from schizophrenia and Grimes was eventually placed in foster care. She goes through childhood separated from her sister but realizes the magic of writing. She fills notebook after notebook with her feelings and learns to cope. She now has written many books for young adults and is an amazing writer. This memoir really was a great read; it is written in verse, so it’s fairly short, but it gets the point across and I believe it will help many others who have experienced foster care. Overall, great read.
