Kids Fight Plastic

Written by Martin Dorey, Illustrated by Tim Wesson

The author of Kids Fight Plastic is Martin Dorey, a surfer, beach lover and anti-plastic activist. In 2013, after discovering an area of his local beach knee-deep in plastic bottles, Dorey set up the #2minutebeachclean initiative to encourage people to clean up their local beaches and post pictures of what they recycled. This has led to a very successful clean-up campaign worldwide. In this book, Dorey challenges kids to be #2minutesuperheroes fighting plastic in their homes and neighborhoods. The book is divided into chapters called “missions,” where readers learn how to fight plastic in their garbage, the park, the backpack, and the lunchroom, to name a few. There are points assigned to each mission and profiles of “Everyday Superheros” who are fighting plastic in their own way. There is a section about the history of plastic and a chart listing all the different kinds of plastic, how they are used, and how recyclable they are. Overall, this book is full of interesting facts about plastic, how it negatively affects the ocean, and what we can do to be part of the solution. This info might overwhelm young readers, but would be great for older elementary grades and middle schoolers. This would be a great book selection for Earth Day, oceans, activism, climate change, recycling, and hands-on experiment collections.
