My Words Flew Away Like Birds

Written by Debora Pearson, Illustrated by Shrija Jain

A girl is taught new words by her mother. As the girl comes to the new place, her words fly away like birds. Everyone talks so fast, and many words make no sense. The words do not sound like the words she learned. And everyone calls her the “new girl.” She does not feel new. Everyone else is new. Then she meets a girl with a blue hat at the park and they talk.

And then she meets the girl again at school. Now the girl has new words, words that are here to stay. The story is for those who have left behind everything familiar to embrace the new.
