Walk Toward the Rising Sun: From Child Soldier to Ambassador of Peace

Written by Ger Duany with Garen Thomas

Ger Duany grew up in Sudan in the 1980s and 1990s, during the Second Sudanese Civil War. His father was a soldier and Ger was often left as the man of the house. He spent his childhood trying to survive, take care of his family, and eventually as a child soldier. Eventually, he was able to escape to America as a refugee. The trip to America was an agonizing journey in and of itself. Life in America offered a new set of trials and shocks for a teen learning to make it in an entirely different culture. His powerful memoir will give readers hope and understanding for others who have endured things we can only read in books and see in movies. This is a must have narrative nonfiction choice for middle and high school. Readers will connect with the character and empathize with his journey. Grades 6-12
