The World Between Blinks

Written by Amie Kaufman and Ryan Graudin

The World Between Blinks is the story of two cousins who have grown up in different parts of the world, but always would come home at sometime to visit with their with their Nana. She would tell them stories about her travels and adventures. The book begins with them coming to their grandma’s house for the last time, as she had passed away and their parents were going to sell the house. Their adventure begins as they decide to have one of their own escapades like their Nana. They end up traveling to the World Between Blinks, where many of the forgotten or lost things of the world ended up. They have to travel this world to get the stolen key from a man named Christopher Creaturo.

I thought the idea of the book was cute, but sometimes it was hard to follow what was happening, how they arrived at each different place or even what/who the lost person/thing was. They met Amelia Earhart, traveled to Ostia Antica, met a thylacine (Tasmanian tiger), traveled to the Crystal Palace, met Bessie Hyde and lots of other not well known places and people as they chased after Creaturo. It all came together at the end, but sometimes I felt like it was a bit of a tedious journey to get there.

I liked that one of the main characters spoke in Spanglish sometimes, as that resonates with many of the students here in my library. I would recommend this book to students that are more dedicated to reading, as a student looking for a quick, fun storyline would get bogged down in this book. I did enjoy looking up some of the unknow places and characters to see who they were and how they became “lost.”
