Breda’s Island

Written by Jessie Ann Foley

Breda’s Island tells the aptly named story of Breda, a girl desperate for her busy mother’s attention. After stealing something one too many times, Breda is sent off to live with her quiet and cranky grandfather in the Irish countryside. Follow Breda as she experiences a journey of growth through learning about herself, her family, and her Irish heritage. This book will draw you in with the very real and sympathetic character of Breda, and it will keep you there through its vivid descriptions of rural Ireland.

Breda’s growth as a character during a period of world-shattering changes in her early teen years will leave the reader feeling touched and inspired. Foley, the author, also does not stray away from difficult topics, including issues about immigration to the United States, puberty, and generational trauma. She handles them expertly and provides a unique lens for viewing these issues. Breda’s Island is the perfect read for 5th through 8th graders, providing both an enjoyable story and a description of reality all too real for many people. I would highly recommend this book for junior high school libraries, and I think it is worth considering for 5th and 6th grade students still in elementary.
