Hoops

Written and Illustrated by by Matt Tavares

Hoops is a historical middle grade graphic novel full of heart, set in Wilkins, Indiana, 1976. The newly formed girls’ basketball team lacks resources, including uniforms, equal access to the high school gym, and buses to away games. But Judi, Lisa and Cindy aren’t OK with being treated as “less than” the boys’ team, and through hard work, grit, and teamwork, they’re able to show their community that heroes are the people who are stand up for what they believe in.

This book had me emotionally cheering for the Lady Bears. The wonderful illustrations compliment the story. This is a great motivational read that teaches teamwork and perseverance. There is an interesting author’s note and a historical note explaining the significance of the Title IX education amendment passed in 1972.
