And J.J. Slept

Written by Loretta Garbutt, Illustrated by Erika Rodriguez Medina

This is a sweet story about a newly adopted baby adjusting to his new, loud, and rambuncious family. Turns out that J.J. loves all the noise and chaos that comes from his four older siblings, and when the house is quiet he can’t sleep. This book is clever and shows life in a typical family with lots of kids. I liked that this family is multi-racial, with adoption being just a normal part of the family’s story. Also nice that parents are shown sharing parenting responsibilities equally.
This would be a good choice for kids with new younger siblings, in foster or adoptive situations, or non-traditional families. Illustrations are bright and do a good job of showing the hectic nature of large families. Good choice for pre-k to 1st grade.
