Whale Fall

Exploring an Ocean-Floor Ecosystem

Written by Melissa Stewart, Illustrated by Rob Dunlavey

I really liked this book. This informational picture book tells the circle of life story about whales. It is fascinating that one dead whale can create a little habitat for up to 50 years. In dark, muted blues and black we journey with the artist of this picture book to the barely visible ocean floor where a downed whale has died and sunk. Page-by-page we see the animal feast that the whale body provides to the myriad of creatures that find sustenance over the course of years. This would be a great supplement for teaching ocean life and ecosystems.
