Between Shades of Gray

A 2012 Morris Award Finalist | A 2013 Beehive YA Fiction Nominee

Written by Ruta Sepetys

Lina is 15 years old and a talented artist. She has a whole life planned. But this is 1941 Soviet Union, and people are disappearing all over the neighborhood. Lina, her mother, and brother are deported to Siberia and her father is sentenced to death. I really enjoyed Lina as a character; she is spunky, fearless and never gives up on her art. This novel was an eye-opener to anyone who only learned about the Holocaust from the German point of view. The Soviet Secret Police were as horrible as the Nazis. But like other stories of WWII what shines on every page is the strength of love and the human spirit. It reads easy enough for jr high students, but I would suggest the material is more suitable for high school.
