Americus

Written by MK Reed, Art by Jonathan David Hill

In the small town of Americus, everything gets blown out of proportion and Neil Barton is having a hard time coping. After his best friend gets sent away to military school, Neil turns to his favorite book series, Apathea Ravenchilde, to cope with the stresses of girls, friends, and jocks during his freshman year of high school. When a group of people begin protesting the library having his favorite series on the shelf, Neil finds himself wanting to stand up for what’s right and save his book. Can he find the courage to go up against so many people in town? Will he survive without his best friend?

Exaggerated in many ways, the story of this book is unbelievable in parts. The message, however, is good and the illustrations are well-done. Readers who are into graphic novels, realistic fiction, and activism might enjoy reading this book.
