Game

gameWritten by Barry Lyga

In this second book of the series, Jazz teams up with New York City detectives to hunt down the Hat-Dog Killer. Jazz is the son of the most infamous serial killer, Billy Dent. I think that the author forgot his audience because the killings are even more graphic than in the first book. Jazz is in a constant struggle between doing what he thinks is right and listening to Billy’s voice telling him to do the unthinkable. I found the book and the language disturbing as Jazz describes his sexual fantasies. This book is unsuitable for the YA audience.

This is a follow up to the YA novel I Hunt Killers, which I loved. Two things bothered me about this book. First, because it is extremely graphic, it has no business being labeled YA literature and does not belong in any kind of a school library. Second, it was very good, with the exception of the idea that the NYC police force or FBI would turn to the main character, 17 year old Jasper for guidance. If Jasper were a few years older and was a P.I, a police officer, a social worker, or had some formal education to go along with his experience as the son of a serial killer, it would be an excellent adult crime novel. There is definitely a book 3 on the horizon. I hope Lyga returns to his prior style and perhaps makes book 2 unnecessary to the YA audience.
