Little Robot

Little RobotWritten by Ben Hatke

A giant box falls out of a truck into a river. Meanwhile, a young girl sneaks away from home to go exploring. First she finds an old tool kit in a junkyard. Then she finds a box in the river. Inside is a brand new robot! She powers it up and starts to show the machine how to behave and survive in the world, even fixing it with her scavenged tools. When a monstrous security droid comes from the factory to retrieve the missing robot, the girl tries to protect her new friend. Hi-jinks and cartoon mayhem ensue.

This is a nearly wordless quick read with a lot of appeal. A great challenge for pre- and emerging readers, but older kids, especially struggling readers, might enjoy it as well. I especially love the bravery and resourcefulness of the little girl. The rich, glossy, full color illustrations make this feel as much like a triple-length picture book as a graphic novel. A solid addition to any elementary graphic novels collection.
