A Child of Books

a-child-of-booksWritten and Illustrated by Oliver Jeffers and Sam Winston

This book is a treasure. It is a picture book that adults will value far more than the children it appears to be written for. A picture book for adults, or perhaps any reader who truly cherishes books, stories, or just words. The illustrations are all about books as well. “We can lose ourselves in forests of fairy tales” is illustrated with tree trunks that are the pages of a closed book. The branches are small words. Words in different sizes and shapes are used as much as possible as the illustrations. The text is beautiful. It feels appropriate to have a splash of color here and there, but otherwise just off white pages with black text and drawings. The end pages are tiny text of real books and their authors, printed in rows. A book about words, a book about books, a book about stories. Magical. Engaging. Brilliant.
