Written and Illustrated by Abby Hanlon

Dory is a rascal; at least that is what her family calls her. She certainly does have high spirits and a wild imagination-complete with a host of crazy characters. When Dory met Rosabelle she found someone just like her and a perfect best friend. But when their teacher assigns them reading partners, Dory learns the one thing they are not alike in— Reading. Rosabelle can read chapter books and Dory is a reluctant reader. Can Dory find a way to learn to read books other than Happy Little Farm? Dory’s imagination comes to her rescue and helps her find the answer in the very engaging, extremely funny and well written book Dory Dory Black Sheep.

I think young readers will love Dory and identify with her struggles. Yet her irrepressible nature is so much fun, I think it could help reluctant readers want to read this book all the way to the end and wish there was more. The illustrations capture the humor and add to the story perfectly. If you are looking for a story about a reluctant reader, this is the book. Dory is totally irresistible.

Dory is hilarious! I read the first one three times though-out the summer to my granddaughters who loved her too. I’m so glad to see that you think she is as funny as I do. Great review, thanks Renee!

  2. I loved the first Dory Fantasmagory, and I was really disappointed we couldn’t get it onto the Beehive Children’s fiction list that year. This seems to be divisive series, people either love it or hate it.
