By the Book: Becky Wakefield, Fremont Elementary

Becky has been a media clerk in Granite School District for 21 years. She currently works at Fremont, where she keeps the library impeccably clean and organized. I have never seen any dust!

What books are currently on your nightstand?

A Night Divided by Jennifer A. Nielsen, The Hidden Oracle by Rick Riordan, and Behind the Masks by Susan Patron

What was the last great book you read?

The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah. It is an amazing, moving novel about two French sisters during World War II.

The last book that made you cry?

The Honest Truth by Dan Gemeinhart and before that, The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah (there was serious sobbing!).

The last book that made you laugh?

I just re-read A Long Way from Chicago by Richard Peck. This book and A Year Down Yonder by Richard Peck are two of my favorite laugh out loud books.

What kind of reader were you as a child? What childhood books and authors stick with you the most?

Voracious! I loved to read all the Nancy Drew books, Little Women by Louisa May Alcott and any kind of fairy tale. I begged my mom to read those fairy tales over and over again.

What is the best book you were required to read as a student?

Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell

What book did you hate reading as a student?

Hmm. I seriously can’t think of any!

What is your favorite book to recommend to children?

Wonder by R.J. Palacio. I think it should be required reading for all students.

If you could only bring three books to a desert island, which would you pack?

The whole Lord of the Rings series by J.R.R. Tolkien. How do I bring the complete works? I can’t leave out The Hobbit!

  1. I now have to read The Honest Truth by Gemeinhart. Is has been on a lot of media clerk’s lists of books they have read. Apparently, I will need a box of tissues!

  2. Laura Schmidt

I loved The Nightingale and have recommended it to a lot of people. As a young girl, I also loved Nancy Drew and later Little Women. You are a serious Lord of the Rings fan to bring those books to your desert island!

  3. I absolutely loved A Night Divided. Historical Fiction is my favorite. It has been a big hit with the 5th and 6th graders at my school. I am going to put the Nightingale on my to read list.

  4. The Nightingale transports you through time! It’s one of my favorites too! I felt especially grateful for our blessings while reading it!

  5. Teresa Edmunds

I’m impressed that you would take the Tolkien books on a desert island. They were a challenge for me when I was young, but the descriptive prose could prove useful on an island. ;-)

Becky – you were the first Media Assistant to welcome me to the fold all those years ago. I was so relieved when you asked me to join your table for lunch at one of our trainings. No wonder you’re one of my favorite people to see at our meetings, and your list of books prove it. All but two of them are some of my favorites. You can bet those two are going on my to-read list.
