Disenchanted: The Trials of Cinderella

Tyme, #2

Written by Megan Morrison

A whole new world of Cinderella. Morrison has opened up a unique fairy tale storytelling. Ella gets angry, sassy, and passionate about workers rights; her anger gets the best of her at times. Ella still is a girl that goes from rags to riches. She has a stepmother named Sharlyn, a stepbrother and a stepsister. They are not evil, but are very nice to Ella and help her along her journey. Her stepmother turns out to defend her from the mean Lady Jacquard who wants to see Ella put away for life.

Dash and his Father are freed from their curse. Dash has to learn to make decisions by himself and has a mind to choose what he wants for himself. Dash and Ella try to be just friends but they do fall in love. This story is based on the way people are treated. Morrison focused on the factory workers and the labor laws. Ella and Dash try to make it so that everyone is treated the same. The King and Lady Jacquard do everything that they can to stop it. Lady Jacquard is the evil person in this story.

Rating: ★★★★★ (5 stars)
Interest Level: 5th grade to Adults

The first two-thirds of this book is not a fairy tale remake, but a high school drama. Ella, a.k.a. Cinderella, is whiny and complains all the time. She runs from her problems instead of working for a solution. It is hard to care about her. There are mean girls and bullies. The fairy godmother is lazy and deceitful. I could barely get through it. Finally, in the last few chapters, there starts to be some redeeming qualities. People will like it but I don’t think the targeted age group will find it worth their time. Very disappointing.
