Not So Different

Written by Shane Burcaw, with Photographs by Matt Carr

Shane Burcaw explains his life with a disease, spinal muscular atrophy, with honesty and humor. Since most children (and adults!) are curious about life with a disability, this is an important and interesting book with photographs detailing his struggles and great sense of humor. He tells about his illness, how he got it (genetics), it’s progression, and how he handles his challenges, like eating, bathing, dressing and traveling. He also talks about things he has in common with everyone, like playing sports, video games, making friends, and having a girlfriend. This is a safe and comfortable way to discuss what might be an awkward conversation. The book is well done and answers many questions that kids really want to ask.
