A New Year’s Reunion

A Chinese Story

Written by Yu Li-Qiong, Illustrated by Zhu Cheng-Liang

Maomao seldom sees her father because he builds houses in places far away. He comes home only during the Chinese New Year. Maomao almost doesn’t know him at first, after he has been gone for a year. Soon the family is celebrating the Chinese New Year together. The reader gets a sense of the closeness of the family, even though their time together is bittersweet.

The illustrator uses vivid colors in his pictures (with a lot of red). Even though the pictures are simple, they convey a lot of emotion. I feel that our students will enjoy this book, especially during the Chinese New Year.
