Mahalia Jackson: Walking with Kings and Queens

Mahalia JacksonWritten by Nina Nolan, Illustrated by John Holyfield

This was a great book to recommend to our 3rd grade classes as they search for biographies of famous African-Americans. It is a simple and beautiful story of Mahalia Jackson. It tells about her life and the struggles she went through, how singing always made her feel good despite everything. It tells how she eventually sang for people like Martin Luther King, Jr. and John F. Kennedy and how she became known as the Queen of Gospel.
