The Moon Platoon

Space Runners, #1

Written by Jeramey Kraatz

The year is 2085, and Benny is one of 101 young men and women selected to spend two weeks at the Lunar Taj, a high-tech resort on the moon, and to meet its brilliant founder, Elijah West. Quite an accomplishment for a poor kid from the Drylands, and one that is bound to change his fortunes. The first person he meets on the trip is the bash and boastful Drue, and although they end up in the same group, Benny is unsure if he will be a friend or a foe. Other group members include the bright and resourceful Jasmine, Ramona, who talks ‘computer,’ and Hot Dog, a girl who can drive anything. Together they embark on the trip of their dreams, but when strange things begin to happen they realize that all is not as it seems, and that the moon holds secrets Elijah is trying to hide. This is a fun, engaging story that kids will enjoy. Despite the different setting, the beginning of Space Runners feels a little like a Harry Potter plot, but this is quickly forgotten as the story evolves.
