The Button War
Written by Avi

A dark and graphic historical fiction set in the early 1900s. Seven boys living in a small Russian-occupied Polish village challenge each other to some daring and dangerous escapades to quell their boredom. Jurek, the self-proclaimed leader of the group, challenges the boys to possibly the most dangerous challenge yet, to find the most unique button. Not any old button will do either, it must be a button off a soldier’s uniform. Living or dead. All is well until Patryk (our narrator) notices an enormous black bird flying out of the sky toward his village. As it gets closer it appears to be a fire breathing dragon, only dragons aren’t real. This is something he has never seen before: an aeroplane (airplane.) And not just any aeroplane, it is a German aeroplane. From this point on this small unchanging village is forever changed, as are the boys who sought out danger for fun. As always Avi delivers an awesome read that draws you in, and lets you live as if you were there in the village experiencing all that Patryk and friends experience.
