Molly’s Moon Mission

Written and Illustrated by Duncan Beedie

This is a story about having a dream, setting a goal, failing, and not giving up. Molly is a moth who dreams of becoming an astronaut and flying to the moon. Discouragement and doubt from her mother and other insect creatures never let her lose her determination, and along the way she has a few adventures. Although the finale is extremely far-fetched, even for a child’s fantasy, the premise and intermediary plot twists are darling and put a smile on my face. I mean, of course we all know she is going to get to the moon in the end, but there doesn’t seem like enough of a challenge except her misguided concept of the enormity of her task. In my adult trying to make sense of things mind, she never gets tired, or hurt, etc.

The illustrations are cute. I look forward to reading this aloud to my students. It also shows Molly as a teacher inspiring other little creatures to reach for their dreams.
