Read this book in Granite’s Sora

Written by Varian Johnson, Illustrated by Shannon Wright

This graphic novel does a great job of going over some “growing pains” that children face as they get older and transition to secondary schools. It talks about finding an identity, growing into yourself, and even touches on systemic racism. It does it all in a way that is fun to read and not stress over.

It is a great way to analyze how illustrations and text can work together to convey messages to audiences. There are several ELA standards this could support along that vein in at least grades 5 and 6.
