Historical fiction, fantasy, the supernatural – this book has it all. Root Magic delves into African American folk magic called rootworking. Jezebel and her twin brother, Jay, live in 1960s South Carolina. Their grandma was a rootworker and now that she’s passed and they’re old enough, their uncle is going to start teaching them all about rootworking. Rootwork has helped a lot of people in their community but, they soon learn, it also comes with dangers. As if that’s not enough, Jez is struggling with having any friends at school and a local police deputy keeps harassing and threatening her family and their way of life. It’s a wonderful story of family, friendship, and courage that will keep you on the edge of your seat. The author based many of the happenings in the book from her grandmother, her great aunt, and her mother’s experiences – be sure to read the author’s note at the end!
