Poison in the Colony: James Town 1622

Written by Elisa Carbone

What was it like to live in America in the time of the Mayflower? What must it have been like to be the first girl to be born to colonizers in the new world? This book tells this fictional story. The first English child born in the new world was named Virginia, just like the colony. She goes on an exciting adventure and her character changes so much throughout this story. I will definitely recommend this to students that enjoy historical fiction books. It’s a little bit of a jump from the I survived books in reading level, so I will search for other books that bridge the gap.

I wasn’t sure how interesting this book would be, but I was pleasantly surprised. It is well written and intriguing. I learned so much about life in Virginia in the 1600s. I appreciate the research that went into writing this book and I like that she used real people’s names and imagined a story to go with their names. I have to admit that initially I judged this book by it’s cover and I would have missed a good read if I had stayed with my original judgment.
