Truly Tyler

Emmie & Friends Series

Written and Illustrated by Terri Libenson

Libenson’s graphic novels are a huge hit in our library so I thought I’d read this latest book in her Emmie & Friends Series. Tyler and Emmie are opposites and Emmie is ecstatic that she gets to be partners with Tyler for the school art project. Tyler plays basketball and his friends don’t understand why he wants to spend more and more time with less popular Emmie. Emmie has a crush on Tyler but is tired of the mean comments she gets from his friends. Tyler has to decide if he will be true to himself and in the end finds peace with his feelings in being friends with Emmie.I can see why students love these books. They are very relatable to what a 5th grader/middle school child might witness or experience at school. It wasn’t my favorite book to read, but I did like that there was more text than most graphic novels. The pictures are big and nice and just enough to appeal to a student who doesn’t love reading.
